Project Description

Retellings: Scholar Garden

SUNY Purchase, New York

Michael Singer was selected to build a temporary outdoor installation for the Neuberger Museum of Art’s 1997 Biennial Exhibition of Public Art located on the State University of New York Purchase College Campus. He selected a woodland site within view of a campus trail. The site’s large rock outcroppings inspired this mixed-media temporary sculptural garden constructed of wood, cement board, stucco, copper and pre-cast concrete. The work is set within existing naturalized vegetation among a variety of mature and medium growth trees. One structure clearly defines and encloses the larger rock formations. A second smaller structure is placed nearby and set into the ground plane. Within this second piece sculptural elements encompass and frame a small earthen well.

This project was sponsored by the New York State Council on the Arts, The Westchester Arts Council and private donations.
