In 1996 Michael Singer was commissioned to provide a master plan for the expansion and reconfiguration of the New England Science Center now known as the EcoTarium. The current facility was designed by Edward Durrel Stone and built in 1968. The plan includes renovation of the existing building, new exhibitions, animal habitat exhibitions, as well as new site planning for nature trails, parking areas, traffic circulation and reconstructed wetlands. The master plan resulted in an $18 million project for the design and construction of the programs identified in the master plan. Singer formed a team with Ken Radtkey, Yianni Doulis and Brook Muller of Blackbird Architects to design the renovation and new facilities. The first phase of this project, $12 million, has been completed.
