During the Spring of 1996, Michael Singer lead a team of architects, planners and Dartmouth College students in developing an alternative to a Venturi, Scott Brown Associates master plan for Dartmouth's North Campus. The Venturi, Scott Brown Associates master plan proposed a 19th century design approach to the site; the creation of a quad surrounded by new buildings with Georgian historic references as the design initiative. The Singer Team "Interim Master Plan Study for the North Campus" offers an immediate, five year and twenty year plan that integrates the New England landscape with building needs on the North Campus. The Singer Team plan reflects concerns regarding sustainability, regenerative design, as well as design initiatives that are inviting to the diverse population at the college. The plan became a focus for a campus-wide forum to discuss the North Campus future and several of the plans strategies have been adopted for landscape and building design guidelines at the school.
