Canal Origins Park
Chicago, Illinois, 1998

The Chicago Parks District along with the Canal Corridor Association commissioned Michael Singer to design a new park for Chicago. The design of this two-acre site is the result of collaboration with Richard Rabinowitz of American History Workshop and Blackbird Architects. The design integrates interpretive programs and meanings of this place with participatory sculptural and landscape elements. The site is a designated Chicago Landmark that is currently a neglected urban industrial environment. The Canal Origins Park design preserves an important historic resource and reclaims and revitalizes a wildlife habitat and wetland. The park will also provide a place of discovery and learning for Chicago youth, create much needed green space for underserved communities, and offer new public access to the Chicago River.
