AES Cogeneration Facility
Londonderry, New Hampshire, 2000

AES Londonderry, LLC commissioned Michael Singer in 1999 to design a new power plant, the largest in New England, in an Eco-Industrial Park in Londonderry. By 1999 this state-of-the-art Cogeneration Plant had already been engineered and received all approvals and permits. However, the site design and architectural design had not been completed. AES presented Singer with the challenge to design a facility that is well integrated into the community, in fact becomes an amenity to the community, and looks and behaves less like a typical industrial power plant, while setting a positive and innovative example for the future design of energy facilities. Singer brought together a design team including Blackbird Architects, William Reed (sustainable development specialist), and John Todd Research and Design (natural systems engineers) to investigate and design this alternative vision.
